What is halitosis?

Most people have smelly breath when they wake up in the morning or after eating a meal with strongly flavored foods. But halitosis refers to having bad breath all the time, even after brushing your teeth. This type of bad breath is usually a sign of dental health problems or underlying medical conditions.

Why does my breath smell so bad?

Chronic bad breath, also called halitosis, can be caused by one or many different dental health conditions, including the following.

  • Gum disease
  • Bacteria-filled plaque
  • Inconsistent dental hygiene
  • Mouth breathing
  • Cavities or infection
  • Cigarettes or tobacco products
  • Dry mouth
  • Dental appliances
  • Various medical conditions

Easy ways to prevent bad breath

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes and floss daily
  • Get a dental cleaning and exam every 6 months, or as instructed by your dentist
  • Avoid cigarettes and tobacco products
  • Stay hydrated!
  • Breathe through your nose, not your mouth
