Adults and children who deal with bruxism (teeth grinding) or jaw clenching, or who suffer from TMJ or sleep apnea can benefit from wearing custom-fit mouth guards during sleep. These dental guards also help prevent damage to the teeth and improve overall restfulness during the night.

Problems that can be treated with a dental mouth guard

R

Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Clenching and grinding your teeth while you sleep is a common problem. In most cases, teeth grinding is completely involuntary. You may not even know that you’re doing it. However, if left untreated, bruxism can lead to a variety of other dental health and wellbeing problems, including the following:

  • Loss of enamel
  • Receding gums
  • Chips and cracks
  • Facial pain
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Jaw pain or TMJ
  • Headache
R

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders impact the jaw joints as well as the surrounding muscles and ligaments that control chewing, swallowing, and speech. TMJ can be caused by a variety of factors, including trauma, a misaligned bite, and arthritis. It can also be caused by involuntary clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth together during the day or night.

Symptoms of TMJ include the following:

  • Discomfort, pain, or tenderness in the jaw
  • Pain in one or both of the temporomandibular joints
  • Earaches
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Aching pain in the face or neck
  • Locking or popping of the joint
R

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a medical condition that causes a person to temporarily stop breathing periodically during the night due to an airway blockage. This is a dangerous condition that impacts a person’s quality of life, and it can lead to other health issues including high blood pressure, heart attack, and even brain injury.

Common symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Waking up at night to use the bathroom
  • Restless sleep
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Severe morning headaches
  • Unexplained and sudden changes in mood

Answers to frequently asked questions

t

Can I just use a generic sports mouth guard?

It is not recommended to use a sports mouth guard for dental health problems. Sports guards are designed to protect against impact injury, while dental mouth guards are made custom to optimize comfort and address your specific dental problem. Sports guards are also not made from the same quality materials as dental mouth guards, making them generally too bulky and uncomfortable for sleep.
t

How do I clean my mouth guard?

Upon waking up and removing your mouth guard, rinse with warm water and gently brush the guard with a gentle toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Be sure to focus on the harder-to-reach grooves and ridges.
