Swallow your dental crown?
Can’t find your lost crown and wondering if you swallowed it? Don’t stress. Swallowing lost crowns is actually pretty common. Crowns are made of non-toxic material and will pass naturally.
Is a lost crown an emergency?
A lost or broken crown usually doesn’t cause any pain, but it shouldn’t be ignored. It’s important to see a dentist about a lost or broken dental crown to prevent decay, disease, and pain in the underlying tooth. Failing to get a new crown within a couple of days will increase your risk of the tooth becoming loose, falling out, or developing an infection.
Why do dental crowns break or fall out?
- Hard, crunchy, or sticky foods
- Knocked loose playing sports
- Impact accidents like car accidents
- Detached on its own — rare but possible!
My temporary crown fell off, what should I do?
We provide our patient with the option of single visit crown or in some cases get it customized from the lab. The single visit crown are done at the same time where as if the crowns are done with the lab then it involves a temporary. We give our patients a temporary crown while their permanent is being custom-crafted. This temporary crown helps maintain space for the permanent crown and provides some chewing function and protection for the underlying tooth.
If you lose this temporary crown between visits, call our office and we’ll see you soon. Remaking or recementing a temporary crown takes just a few minutes and can usually be done without aneasthetic.

Always call us. Do not try to re-cement the crown on your own using drug store temporary dental cement. In some cases, we may be able to bond the crown back in place.
